Fish Talk – Measure Your Catch

Hiya folks,

Y’know, some of the best fishing in Canada right now is happening on lakes with special regulations. Special size limits—where you put the bigger fish back and you can keep a couple of smaller ones for dinner. What that means, however, is you need to be able to accurately measure your catch. And the best way to do that is to get yourself a ruler with a bumper board. This way, you put the nose of the fish at one end and then you measure where the tail is, and you can see whether it falls inside the slot or outside the slot.

The other really important thing to know is whether the Natural Resource Agency require you to measure with the tail pinched in or folded out naturally. This can account for a difference of up to three-quarters of an inch, so know which way you need to do it, measure your fish accurately, and that way you can have your cake—or in this case Walleye—and eat it, too.
