Fish Talk – Colour My World

Hiya folks,

One of the most frequently asked questions that I get at seminars is, “How important is colour?” or “Is colour really important?”

The answer—believe it or not—is yes and no!

Every time you pick a lure out of your tackle box, the one thing you always want to think about is depth control. Do the fish want the bait up on the surface or do they want it down on the bottom? You want to then look at speed control. Do I want a lure that’s going to go fast or slow?

Third and fourth is the size and the profile of your bait. Do they want a small bait or a larger bait? Do they want a short, squat-looking bait or do they want something long and slender?

When you get those four ingredients sorted out, then all of a sudden colour becomes extremely important. But it’s important from a fine-tuning perspective.  So, number one, depth control. Number two, speed control. Three and four, size and profile of your bait. And then worry about its colour.
