Fish Talk – Body Language

Hiya folks,

Reading a fish’s body language—that’s what I want to talk about today.

It’s interesting how many fish we catch over the course of a season that we actually spot first, before we even make a cast. It might be a Northern Pike or a Largemouth or Smallmouth in the spring/early-summer period, or Lake Trout cruising in ultra-clear water. Same thing with muskies in late-summer/early-fall; we often see them first!

If you read their body language and see how those fish are acting, it’ll tell you whether they’re catchable or not. For example, if that fish is swimming in a tight circle in one specific area, it’s likely being very territorial, guarding the spot—really catchable. If it swims away slowly? Again, very, very catchable.

On the other hand, if it’s “pedal to the metal” and it scoots away, that fish is likely seeing you and it’s gonna be a much, much tougher challenge. So back off, make long, long casts, and don’t let your presence known. Most important of all, though: Read the fish’s body language!
