Did You Know? – Float Your Fanny Down the Ganny

Did you know that the Ganaraska River is home to one of the most outrageous watercraft races ever?

Every spring, teams of creative adventure-seekers flock to the Ganaraska to take part in the wildly fun and popular event known as “Float Your Fanny Down the Ganny.” Here, those daring enough can brave the frigid Ganny waters on their own hand-crafted, makeshift watercraft. It’s a 10-kilometre race in which participants navigate twists and turns, low bridges, shallows and rapids—all while taking fire from the shore and fellow competitors!

Those into more traditional means of travel are invited to take part in a separate race for canoes and kayaks!

But for those in search of ultimate glory or hilarious hijinks, “Float Your Fanny Down the Ganny” promises an unforgettable experience.

This annual event was established to commemorate the 1980 flood that devastated the scenic town of Port Hope. This is where the race concludes, and where spectators gather each year to cheer on participants and to join in the post-race festivities. And when the party’s over? Throw your line in and take advantage of the river’s legendary Trout fishing!
