BC and Pym

Our latest Fish’n Canada adventures has brought us to British Columbia and Northern Ontario.

Late May had us flying to Vancouver Island to Kenzies Fishing Adventures on the Cowichan River for some amazing fishing. First up was a Brown Trout drift fishing show which I hosted down the Cowichan… which is a gorgeous stretch of river. Both Spinfishing and Flyfishing are the norm here but I opted for spinning gear. Some of the drifts were quick and some were slow so casting accuracy certainly came into the equation.

I hit lots of Browns and Rainbow in all sizes using mostly Alligator Spoons and small Minnowbaits. The difficulty was it’s a barbless fishery and when a trout decides to spin or jump… you definitely loose fish. I lost a bunch but in the end, I boated a nice variety of both species with a couple of beauty Browns!

Location 2 was Shawnigan Lake for Smallmouth Bass hosted by Ang and Mike. They wailed on shallow fish on docks and beds. Yamamoto Tubes and Shad Shape Worms turned most of the fish. We were again accommodated with a Princecraft Boat/Merc Motor from the kind folks at Cascade Marine in Chilliwack (if you’re in the market for any marine products, please check them out). Ang and Mike ended up with another amazing BC Bass show with lots of 4+ pounders!

A huge thanks goes out to Kenzie and Kyt for their great guiding, awesome hospitality and outstanding accommodations.

Part 2 of the trip had us on the mainland of BC and back to Above and Beyond, our home away from home when we travel west. D and Dana as usual put on a first class operation for us! I think I can talk for the rest of the crew in saying “we love you gals!”

As far as the fishing was concerned, Mike hit the Fraser River for yet another fantastic Sturgeon show with Vic Carrow of STS Guiding in Mission. Vic is “the premiere Sturgeon Guide” on the Fraser. Mikey caught lots of fish and ended the show with a 6’10” behemoth that even gave our big co-host a major work out!

Part 2 of this leg of the trip had Angelo and Vic up the Pitt River fishing for Bull Trout; a relatively unknown species to the general public. The scenery was the most stunning part of this shoot. Snow capped mountains in the background, beautiful green forest in the near distance and a beautiful cold water river under Ang & Vics feet! Believe it or not, the Trout are just an added bonus.

They had a great day which was anchored by Angelo bringing in a beauty 7+ pound Bull.

All in all BC was an outstanding success.

Thanks to BC Tourism and BC Ferries for their assistance in putting this shoot together.

Our next adventure took us to Hearst Air’s Pym Island outpost on the Attawapiskat River for Walleye and Pike. As timing rules everything, the Mayfly hatch was in full swing so the Walleye fishing was tougher than we expected. That said, we still caught enough to eat Walleye fillets for the entire trip; not a bad compromise! (by the way, we have been told by many sources when the Walleye fishing is on, it’s second to none)

The Pike fishing however… oh my god!!! Ang and I didn’t have to travel more than a couple of miles from the outpost to encounter excellent Northern action in the Attawapiskat! Tons of fish in the high 30 – 40+ inch range; very strong fish I might add! We used a variety of baits with a brown Yamamoto Saltwater Swimbait, a Spinnerbait and a huge Bass Magnet Tube being the baits of the day.

In mid day the smaller Swimbait and Spinnerbait really did the job but in the mornings, that giant tube was a perfect breakfast for the big river Pike.

Be sure to catch this “most excellent” Northern Pike episode in the fall of 2010.
